Mile High Organics provides organic produce delivery directly to your door once a week and, for a very reasonable price. From personal experience, my produce was very high quality, and unbelievably fresh when delivered. I would venture to say the quality was better than my typical Whole Foods produce.

While I am not trying to sound like an infomercial or anything, I just want people to know about this great up and coming company. I am excited to see how others embrace this idea of produce delivery. Check out their website to read more, and possibly place an order to try it out for yourself.

For my first post back I am going to share an ad from the NYC Health Department.

Not only is this ad very factual, it is somewhat disturbing. I am all for the running of this advertisement, but others feel it is too much. Click on the link to watch it and let me know what you think by commenting below.

I hope I can eventually manage my time well enough to be able to run the blog along with my school work, but at this time it is just not possible.I have a new layout in mind and want to do an overhaul to the blog appearance, so I am going to have to step away from writing until I have the time and energy to create worthy posts.

Thanks for understanding!

I want to dedicate this post to my love for salad. Oh green, leafy leaves how you taste so good and fresh. Topped with fresh vegetables + raw goat cheese and my heart melts. Please never leave me.

Yeah a little on the weird side, but that is how I feel right now and you have to express your emotions somehow! On another note, I am learning to enjoy the simplicity of life. Extravagant meals are always lovely, but simple dinners have grown on me. And this leads me to our simple dining experience at ModMarket.

Ryan and I both noticed this new little eatery and so we gave’r a shot. MODMarket is a simple place to enjoy a salad or flatbread (pizza). I was a little surprised by the menu – definitely only salad and flatbread – don’t expect anything but.

I chose the Build Your Own Salad and Ryan went with a half order of Goat Cheese Flatbread One thing I did notice is they offered gluten-free flatbread. Ryan’s portion was small and he wished he would have ordered the regular size. Inelaborate and tasty.

I would go back and enjoy another meal from there. The build your own salad was priced extremely well. A great lunch + family + reasonably priced restaurant. I will be interested to see if this place gains popularity. If you have a chance stop on in for a simple meal.

Let me know if you’ve enjoyed a meal from there!

Larabar that is!

BuThey were gracious enough to send me a delicious sample pack! It was mailed to my parents home in Nebraska so it took a bit longer for me to get the package…. boy was I excited when I had them in hand…

I received a great variety of bars!

But the main reasons why I love these bars because:

–> Pure, simple ingredients!

–> Gluten-free

–> Raw + Vegan

–> No added sugars + no preservatives

I have been keeping these on hand in my purse + backpack and love them as snacks! They are the perfect addition to my snack list. Note: I am not a fan of typical “bars” because they usually have ingredient lists a mile long + high in sugars and calories + never satisfying

I highly suggest giving these brightly colored bars a chance

What great colors!

Rank of my favorite flavors in the sample pack:

1) Cashew Cookie

2) PB + J

3) Apple Pie

4) Cherry Pie

5) Tropical Fruit Tart
So go to your local grocer and look for Lara!

Here’s a tip for the Cherry Pie — a lot of people find this bar a bit tart so if I am not in the mood for tart-ness I pair the bar with a few peanuts! It reminds me of the PB + J bar….

I found a great Cherry Pie + Cashew Cookie + Apple Pie pack of 12 (I think?!) at the Superior Costco near Boulder!

THANKS LARABAR FOR THE SAMPLE PACK! I LOVE THEM

I made this delicious green juice this morning with my Breville:

8 organic kale leaves

1 head of organic romaine lettuce

2 organic (small) lemons

1 organic granny smith apple

multiple drops of liquid stevia

I think I overdid it on the kale today because this was a bit too “green” tasting. BUT this is the juice that I make every morning, usually with only 4 kale leaves though!

Last month I received a great sample pack of Dr. Ayala’s Herbal Water! We connected via Twitter, and she offered to send me a sample pack because it is not sold in the Rocky Mountain Region.

I want to share a brief summary of what attracted me towards this product:

“Ayala’s Herbal Water is the first nationally available organically certified enhanced flavored water made with all organic ingredients. Each Herbal Water blend is all-natural and sets a new standard for healthy beverages: zero calories, zero artificial sweeteners, flavors and colors, and zero chemical preservatives”

– copied from herbalwater.com

My favorite part is that there are no creepy, weird ingredients in this flavored water! I love love love flavored waters but I am always disappointed once I read the ingredient labels and find they are flavored with crap!

There are six flavors total:

Lemongrass Mint Vanilla

Lavender Mint

Lemon Verbena Geranium

Cloves Cardamom Cinnamon

Cinnamon Orange Peel

Ginger Lemon Peel

The Lemongrass Mint Vanilla & Ginger Lemon Peel were my absolute favorite flavors!

I really like these in place of water. In fact, I have been taking them to class with me to sip on during lecture and it is so refreshing! The one thing I did notice is they are best served very chilled. There were a couple flavors that I was not 100% in love with, but I feel that is because I have never tasted those herbs before (like Verbena + Geranium!). And because I don’t like orange flavorings, I was not a fan of the Cinnamon Orange Peel.

My mom on the other hand loved the Lemon Verbena Geranium!

I also really liked the flavor pictured above. I have yet to try the Lavendar — I am saving it for a warmer day to have as a cool refreshment.

Would I buy Herbal Water if they sold it in Boulder?

Yes, I imagine I would! I feel I would purchase them if they were sold in packs, more so than individually. I will typically buy a bottled unsweetened green tea if I have dinner at Whole Foods, so this would be a great tea replacement. As I strive to drink more water I believe the wonderful herbal flavors would encourage me to gulp down more H2o!

I will definitely ask my local Whole Foods to start carrying Dr. Ayala’s Herbal Water!

Have any other readers tried Herbal Water before?

Where in the world has Boulder Bite been?

Obviously I have not been around for quite some time. The end of this summer and start of school left me in an awkward predicament. I was home in Nebraska for awhile and then back in Boulder, living out of suit case and at Ryan’s apartment. I am quite thankful I was able to have a place to stay, but I am even more grateful to be in my own home.

Obviously a lot happens in such a short amount of time, I have many ideas and posts for the future so I hope you are looking forward to them as much as I am.

_______________________________

Ryan and I ventured over to Pearl Street the other night to try out the new restaurant in town SALT. Rumors have it that they spent around a million bucks fixing the old building up to make it what it is… and as we admired the renovations – I could imagine they probably did.

Long story short, but the previous restaurant in this location was Tom’s Tavern and it was once a hot spot for good burgers in Boulder… but my experience there last year was nothing short of horrible. No wonder it was up for sale and snatched up by a well-known chef of the area.

Anyways on to our meal, I was pleased with the menu, showcasing locally grown ingredients. The place was busy, as expected, and our service lagged because of it.

I did read a condensed history of salt on the menu while waiting for service, which was quite interesting. On to the food…. I ordered:

Roasted Beet Salad + Soup Special of the night (tomato something..)

The soup was good. Decent flavor and you could tell it was fresh. The salad was tasty, but I felt it lacked the goat cheese it mentioned on the menu. Definitely was very sparse.

Main entrees included: Roasted Vegetables + Burger and Fries

Obviously you know who ordered what. Ryan is a burger man while I inhale veggies.

Polenta on top!

Blurry pictures due to bad lighting. Ughh!

Overall I was pretty pleased with my dishes and Ryan was as well. Quite frankly, it was not anything out of this world. But I imagine we will go back again down the road once it loses its “newness” appeal and hope that the service gets a bit better.

One thing that makes me a bit uneasy about restaurants is when they don’t offer a gluten-free menu. Our waitress promised if I told her to it needed to be gluten-free she would have the chef prepare it that way, but I like a little explanation of what they are doing different to the dish, than the normal one.

I did have somewhat of a stomach knot later that night and I am curious as to whether or not it was because my meal was not prepared gluten-free…. but that is the chance you take when eating out!

Give this place a shot if you live in the area.

I would like to hear about your experience.

After some deep thought, while watching the Tour de France, I decided it’s about time I start posting more informational tidbits on the blog instead of always posting about myself.

This blog is devoted to living a healthy and active lifestyle… correct? So let’s start talking more about what that means!

The best place to start is to learn and inform oneself about healthy food options and misconceptions. So here we go… I want to tackle a few food misconceptions! These are all things I keep in mind when choosing what to eat.

Chicken/Tuna Salad Sandwiches

Having a name with “salad” in it can often be misleading. You may think this is the perfect, healthy lunch option — please think again! These bad boys have mega amounts of calories and fat in them because they are mostly all mayonnaise. The Chicken Salad Sandwich from Arby’s contains a whopping 860 calories, 1,270 mg of sodium and 44 g of fat. Tuna salad sandwiches can be even worse because tuna is so fine there is a heck of a lot more surface area for the mayonnaise to fill…. so beware!

Healthier alternatives: Make your own at home using yogurt or avocado in place of mayo…. or if you must, go light on the mayo.

‘Americanized’ Sushi

Watch out for sushi rolls and those with loads of cream cheese. Thanks to the Americanization of Japanese sushi it is a good idea to think before you order. Stick with sashimi, miso soup, salads and rolls that aren’t stuffed with cream cheese or fried. The term “tempura” instantly tells you your dish will be fried. Tuna sashimi, for example, has about 35 calories and 1 gram of fat per ounce. But a tempura roll has 320 calories and 17 grams of fat.

Organic Labels Do Not Always Mean Healthy

Organic labels can be misleading because it can be stamped on a variety of foods besides fruits and vegetables. It is important to remember that organic foods still have calories! That bag of organic potato chips or sack of organic oreos still has the same amount of calories as conventional ones. This can often be very misleading on many products.

Fat-Free, Sugar-Free Muffins/Snacks

Watch out for these! A simple muffin from the grocery store can contain up to 600 calories… even if it is fat and sugar free! Not only that, but what are they using to replace the sugar? Most likely it is an artificial sweetener. It is important to avoid chemical substitutes – as many have been linked to cancers. In my personal opinion, why eat something that your body does not recognize? Your body definitely won’t understand artificial sweeteners.

Lastly, fat-free products typically have ingredient lists a mile long with words you can’t even sound out. Do you ever think twice about what those fake ingredients are doing in your body? Opt for a healthier breakfast or snack by choosing whole foods, those less processed or make your own at home.

In the end it is always important to choose whole, unprocessed foods for most meals/snacks. I hope this was helpful and more misconceptions/helpful insights will be posted in the future.

Happy Monday!
